Agile, Mechanics and Change

There is so much more to changing the way we work than we often believe. The larger the change and the longer time the present system of work has been in place, the stronger the inertia in that system.  The stronger this inertia, the more difficult to make the change from present practices to a new method.  It does not help when we see what appears to be a simple system and hurriedly adopt it as our way of working.  We think if we know the mechanics, we know how to make the desired change happen at our company.  This is the situation with agile.

Agile looks to be simple mechanics.  That is true, the mechanics ARE simple, and will likely not get your company where it desires if you pay attention only to the mechanics.  There are many cultural changes that are required to be able reap the benefits of agile.  However, rather than heading off chasing this as a new fad, we should understand the benefits, and see if these benefits are the things are the sort our organization seeks.  We should likewise understand the organizational changes to see what is truly required to make the transition from present system to agile.  Just what are those cultural changes? What sort of organizational changes are required?  We will review some fundamental changes that may need to be considered to move from the present way of working to this agile approach.

Project Management Institute – Metrolina Chapter is planning its annual Professional Development Symposium. This years 1-day professional development event will be held from 8am – 5pm on September 14, 2019 in Charlotte at the Embassy Suites by Hilton at Ayrsley.

Configuration Management Guest Lecture

Configuration Management book

Jon M Quigley and Kim Robertson will be guest lecturers on Configuration Management at the Eindhoven Technical University, invited to do so by Ton De Kok.  A new Master level class on Configuration Management is being developed at the university and uses the configuration management book authored by Jon and Kim.  In addition to recorded lectures over the week, there will be a configuration management conference held at ASML where other high-tech companies of the region such as DAF trucks will be discussing configuration management challenges with the goal of improving the practice.

Yet knowing what is valid and true is important for any business decision and especially for project managers, that are often part of decision arm and execution arm of the business objectives. In this presentation, we will review the need for critical and objective thinking in the project management discipline, along with some obstacles that come with the demands of the organization upon its people.

Project managers and teams of all organizations have experienced this common conundrum:
their team members are capable, intelligent and well equipped, yet do things that appear to
make no sense. The  signs of bias at work here are hard to see, but that is most likely the case.

In his talk, Jon Quigley will reveal how cognitive bias impacts work, the most common biases we are likely to be affected by, and how they influence selection of strategies, team development, and other areas. The takeaway from the session will include ways to transform a group of individuals into a
whole that is larger than its parts.
